The SPI bootloader that is available in VS10XX chips can be used to add new features to the system. Patch codes and new codecs can be automatically loaded from SPI EEPROM at startup. One interesting application is a single-chip standalone player. The standalone player application uses MMC/SD directly connected to VS1003 using the same GPIO pins that are used to download the player software from the boot EEPROM.
